How CyberKnife Treatment Works

Because the kidney is located near the bowel and lungs there is constant movement as a result of natural bodily functions, such as breathing and the passing of gas. Treating with conventional radiation solutions poses serious challenges for cancer doctors. To treat with conventional radiation technology, the patient must ensure uncomfortable stabilizing devices and/or breath holding techniques or gating during treatment.

The CyberKnife System addresses the challenge of conventional radiation therapy with its innovative and flexible robotic design and sophisticated image guidance and tumor tracking software. The combination of these features allow the system to adapt to the rhythm and movement of the kidney tumor. By doing this, radiation can be delivered with sub-millimeter accuracy, minimizing damage to healthy surrounding tissues and organs and significantly reducing the side effects often associated with radiation therapy.

At the Las Vegas CyberKnife Center, your kidney cancer treatment includes:

  • Treatment Planning – The first step in the process is a CT scan, which will produce an image of your tumor and anatomy. Our team of cancer specialists, including radiation oncologists and medical physicists, will upload the images into the CyberKnife System so they can design a treatment plan just for you. The plan will determine the dose and how to target the tumor with the radiation beams.
  • Treatment – After a plan is created, you will lie on the comfortable treatment couch. The CyberKnife System’s robotic arm will rotate around you. The system’s tumor-tracking software adapts to the movement of your kidney tumor and compensates for any additional patient movement, to ensure that radiation is delivered directly to the intended target. CyberKnife treatments are typically completed in 1 to 5 daily sessions.
  • Post-Treatment – After your treatment you will likely be able to resume your normal daily activities. Some patients may experience short term side effects, such as fatigue
